Drug Charges

In June 2007, Thomas Ravenel faced serious legal trouble when US Attorney Reginald Lloyd accused him of buying less than 500 grams of cocaine in Charleston.

This led to his suspension from his role as state treasurer by Governor Mark Sanford, who appointed someone else temporarily. Ravenel then went to a rehab center for treatment.

He also stepped down from his volunteer position with Rudolph Giuliani’s presidential campaign.

Ultimately, Ravenel resigned as treasurer in July 2007, and the state assembly chose someone else to finish his term.

After completing rehab in Arizona, Ravenel pleaded guilty in September 2007 to conspiring to buy and distribute less than 100 grams of cocaine.

He was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison in March 2008.

However, he was not immediately ordered to start serving his sentence.

Assault and Battery

In April 2018, Ashley Perkins accused Thomas Ravenel of sexually assaulting her mother, Debbie Holloway Perkins, whom he met on Tinder in December 2015.

Ashley claimed her mother told her about the assault, alleging Ravenel forced himself on her.

Debbie reportedly signed a non-disclosure agreement, but Ashley spoke out publicly about the incident.

Ravenel’s lawyer, Richard P. Terbrusch, denied the allegations, calling them unfounded because of Ravenel’s fame.

Bravo and the production company of “Southern Charm” launched an investigation into the claims.

In May 2018, a second accuser, Dawn Ledwell, Ravenel’s children’s former nanny, came forward with similar allegations.

She claimed Ravenel assaulted her in January 2015. Ledwell’s case led to a police investigation.

Ashley Perkins later expressed doubts about Ledwell’s claims, leading to a strained relationship between them.

Ledwell eventually dropped the “forcible rape” accusation.

In September 2019, Ravenel pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and battery related to Ledwell’s case.

He paid a fine and settled a civil suit by donating to a charity for sexual assault survivors.
